Every day we come to work is a day that we can make our teammates, our farmers, our eaters, and our community feel more valuable than the day before.
We are committed to the well-being of people around us. We are working together to make each other better.
Commitments
By reading and reviewing this Social Contract, we are saying that we will do our best to uphold our commitments to each other and to Bessie.
If you hold a commitment close to your heart and would like to share it with the whole team (or want to make an update), message @Spencer Kerber and he will work with you to update Bessie's Social Contract.
🍽 Full plates.
- Every employee has meaningful work. A lot of it. We each have the power to make our food systems better—from small choices to large harvests. We each have portions of this responsibility, but thankfully we can share them together for a healthy balance.
🥠 Curiosity leads to fortune.
- Be curious about the problem and hungry for a solution. Breaking things is a good thing as long as we are willing to solve them. Figure out the "why" of a problem by yourself or with a team member to create a solution. If something is longer term, throw it in the roadmap, map out your thoughts, tag a team member, and continue to solve the problem!
🍅 Respectful reviews.
- Feedback is important. Creating the space where questions and feedback is encouraged and welcome. Communicate with a blend of humility and confidence. Avoid "talking down". Our reviews support future attempts at hard problems.
📃 Plan recipes.
- Deliverables and being on time. These are planned quarterly, prioritized weekly, and changed daily. Change is ok—and so are delays...just communicate them as they happen (or before)! Being on time isn't about the ten minutes or two days, it's about telling the other people we work with that they are important and that we value their time.
🧂Many cooks.
- Solid teams focus and listen to each other. We have many stakeholders, some who we work with every day and others we work with only for a fleeting moment. Striving for the greater good means always thinking about how can we best serve our eaters, our farmers, and our fellow staff members.
🥘 Authentic flavours.
- Personal identity is necessary. Showing up to work as your best self is key! It is your responsibility to be yourself and it is Bessie's responsibility to celebrate your qualities with you. Your identity goes beyond typical identity categorizations and includes having personal perspectives, opinions, and ways of doing things.
🧹 Clean up together.
- Plates are spinning everywhere and it's easy to let something drop. It's okay to apologize and recognize when we may not have approached things in the right way. If a decision is made and an idea isn't used, do not take it personally. Assisting to create a win is still a win. We win (and clean up) together.
🎂 Enjoy dessert.
- Celebrate the wins—however small they may seem. Take the time to reflect and appreciate the journey (and results)! Take the time to reflect and let other people know when they are doing good things. Stop calling it failing. Call it learning. Or simply, sweet success!
